ECU Finds Genetic Link Between Alzheimer's, Heart Disease

Researchers at Edith Cowan University's Centre for Precision Health have identified a significant genetic link between Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and several coronary artery disease (CAD)-related disorders, such as angina, ischemic heart disease, and myocardial infarction. The study also found connections between AD and lipid-related factors, including cholesterol and triglycerides.

This discovery suggests that some of the same genes may contribute to both AD and CAD, opening new avenues for research and potentially improving health outcomes for millions worldwide.

The research also highlights the complex relationship between AD and CAD, particularly how shared risk factors like dyslipidemia and inflammation may contribute to both conditions.

These findings underscore the importance of using advanced genetic approaches to explore these connections, as understanding the shared biological mechanisms could lead to better patient care and outcomes for these two leading causes of death, both in Australia and globally.
