    After medical school and a fellowship in Metabolic Diseases at the University of Rome, in Italy, Dr. Fazio enrolled in a Ph.D. program in Experimental Medicine at the University of Siena, in Italy, which he completed at the University of California, in San Francisco (UCSF). From 1993 to 2014, Dr. Fazio was in the faculty at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, first as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Endocrinology, where he founded the Vanderbilt Lipid Clinic and Diagnostic Lipid Laboratory. After promotion to Associate Professor in 1998, Dr. Fazio joined the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine where he became Director of the Atherosclerosis Research Unit. He was promoted to Professor in 2002, and was appointed the Cornelius Vanderbilt Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine and Chief of the section of Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in 2011. Since July 2014 he holds the William and Sonja Connor chair of Preventive Cardiology at the KCVI of OHSU, where he is Professor of Medicine, Physiology & Pharmacology, and Director of the Center for Preventive Cardiology. His clinical focus is cardiovascular risk assessment and management, and preventive cardiology in general. Dr. Fazio’s NIH-supported research portfolio focuses on cholesterol trafficking and atherosclerosis regression. He was an Established Investigator of the American Heart Association and has received about 20 NIH grants as either PI or co-PI. He has published over 290 papers, including original articles, reviews, editorials, and book chapters. He is member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and of the Association of American Physicians. He is on the editorial board of Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, Journal of Lipid Research, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Circulation Research, and Bangkok Medical Journal, associate editor for the Journal of Clinical Lipidology, and editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Preventive Cardiology, official organ of the American Society of Preventive Cardiology. He is the immediate past president of the American Board of Clinical Lipidology.
